SGA Genficathon check-in post

Hello, all! It's been a little over a month since the prompts were sent out. You still have two months until your story is due, but remember that if you're going to receive art for your story, you must turn in a completed rough draft by May 5, just a little over a month from now! You can still edit and beta the story afterwards, but it should not have any major revisions because your artist will be working off the version you gave them. You won't be kicked out for not turning in a story by that point, but you'll miss out on being included in the pool of stories for artists to choose from. All the deadlines are in the community userinfo in case you need to check them.

(And artist signups will be at the end of the month, so art people - you haven't missed it, in case you were worried!)

How are you doing on your story?

Just finishing up, or already done!
I've written some of it, and I'm moving along nicely!
I started it, but now I'm stuckstuckstuck ... help!
I know what I want to write about, but haven't started yet.
I'm brainstorming ideas, but haven't settled on one.
I haven't really thought about it yet.
Other ...?

This check-in is not mandatory, but it would be very helpful to give me an idea of how everyone is doing. If you need some help -- hooking up with a beta, finding someone to brainstorm with -- I am quite open to the idea of using the community to do it; is there any interest in that sort of thing? If you post a comment to this post, keep in mind they're not screened, so don't blow your anonymity. :)

Also, if you're really struggling with your prompt and you're pretty sure you can't get anywhere with it, you can trade it in for another one -- just email me at sga.genficathon at gmail dot com to ask for a new one. I don't want to swap prompts around at the drop of a hat, but if you've been fighting with it for a month and haven't gotten anywhere, I think you're more than welcome to try a new one.

Actually I have a lot of the story written in my head. I just have to get it down on paper!
3rd-Apr-2011 01:59 am (UTC)
Hee! That's always the hard part. :D

I keep waiting for the interface that takes things from your brainwaves and transcribe it to the computer. They haven't gotten an app for that yet!
3rd-Apr-2011 02:14 am (UTC)
Someone needs to tell Steve Jobs to get right on that ... *g*
3rd-Apr-2011 02:11 am (UTC)
I've started on it, I know what I want to write about, but RL keeps kicking me curve balls and I just need to find some TIME.
3rd-Apr-2011 02:13 am (UTC)
Oops! Guess I should've included that as an option on the poll -- because, yeah, finding time to write is just as important as knowing what you want to write about!

I'm one of the "stuckstuckstuck" people, and I'd appreciate a post to find someone to brainstorm with :)
3rd-Apr-2011 11:02 pm (UTC)
I've been busy with mine.... but I'm more than happy to brainstorm. I've finished two... or is it three now? Once in a while my plot bunnies ambush me and I HAVE to write. Other times? They look dead. LOL. I have chat and email if you'd like to get a hold of me. Anyone for that matter!

Hopefully I can help!

Thank you very much for stepping up! :D

I discovered a small snippet in my WIP folder only last night that I'd forgotten about - and now it seems to be turning into a complete story! Yay!
6th-Apr-2011 02:55 am (UTC)
I love it when a story comes together. :D

Of course, it's fallen short of the word count by 400 words!! *sigh*

Oh well, a bit of expanding will probably do it good - it certainly feels like it could do with some!!!

Time for explosions, explanations, and escapes!

Well, that usually pads the word count for me. LOL.

I'm sure you'll get there!

(there's my social interaction for the day)

Thank you!! Tomorrow I'm hoping to get back to the fic and pad it out with explanation and introspection!!
6th-Apr-2011 11:41 pm (UTC)
Not a problem. I love helping others with their writing. And it even helps me to write a little. I look forward to reading your fic at the reveals.

To expand - I've got about 500 words of outline/scene explanation/semi-dialog written, but I haven't figured out how I'm going to work in a setting thing, and I've changed my mind about POV several times since starting the outline.

So I won't say it's partially written, because nothing written will survive, but it's past the basic brainstorming stage.
6th-Apr-2011 02:55 am (UTC)
Well, it's a start, anyway!
3rd-Apr-2011 11:04 pm (UTC) - Other...?
I put myself in the "Other" because I've finished more than one and I'm just making two versions of one to make it fit 'cause a chunk of McShep slipped into the last one I was working on.. LOL

Thank you! :)

I don't really need "help." I just need an extra 50 hours in my days. :) I'll get it done.

Don't we all? *g* Thanks for checking in!

I also found a "story start" in my files that was working very well. Then my muse jumped ship and wrote two drabbles and a 3200 word story in another fandom. I've dragged that sucker back on board the SGA boat and whipped him into line (I hope). When beta time comes, do we have a convenient list of betas, or do I just post a cry for help here???
18th-Apr-2011 01:52 am (UTC)
Yay! :)

I don't have a beta list - actually putting up a post where people can offer their beta services would be an excellent idea! I'll get on it!
18th-Apr-2011 12:07 am (UTC)
I'm late (sorry!) but look to be about 50%ish done. :D
18th-Apr-2011 12:41 am (UTC)
Excellent! Thank you. :)
